HWH MISSION STATEMENT

Home is Where the Heart is (HWH) was originally started in early 2011 with a mission to re-empower displaced people around the world. Since then it has gone on to focus on the Bhutanese Refugee Community living a dreadful life within Refugee Camps in Jhapa district, Nepal. HWH completed its first visit to the camps in September 2011. We met with many individuals and camp authorities as we tried to assess what impact our organisation could have within the refugee community.

Being a very small charitable organisation, we are limited by the funds we have available and this influences the type of projects we are able to work on. We try and choose projects that will have a big positive emotional impact on the refugee community, we look for ripples that can filter out into the refugee community as a whole. There are many scientific reports suggesting that projecting good feelings onto people, not only improves their emotional mind set but also improves the general health and well being of previously hopeless people. With random acts of kindness we try and change the influence in peoples lives.

During our first visit we soon realised the impact this philosophy could have. Having found a poor youth who had no viable future other the miserable life he was currently living, being 18 and without any hope of any further education what so ever, he had nothing of note to believe in, or look forward to. HWH promised to pay the fees for him to return to college and also purchased a bike for travel to college and back. In western terms this was a small gesture, the course fees for two years and the bike valued £250, which in the western world is a relatively average weekly wage. Within the refugee community deprived of any monetary assistance of any note its hard to put this gesture into physical terms, not only do you have the youth in question re-empowered with the belief that someone is looking out for him, but there’s also the positive ripples that foster their way into the community that surrounds him, seeing one of their own being shown support helps to make everyone feel better about themselves. It is our belief that you can ignite positive feelings without having to work within the whole community.

Of course it is our highest and most sincere wish to be able to work with everyone, however at our early stage of development and with the resources that we have available, it sadly just isn’t possible. It is our hope that by positively changing individuals lives on a one by one basis it may have a far greater impact than just the people in question. With reignited self belief its possible for many of life’s hurdles to be overcome. The good feeling that this ignites within the community is one that we hope to work with more and more in the future. We think its better to influence people one by one, rather than attempting to change the whole society as a whole. There’s no telling what these individuals may go on to do with their own lives and furthermore what impact this could have on their own society. We cant wait to help more and more people.
